meet the artisan
& designer
MISKIS.STUDIO is a creative platform of Graphic Designer, Master of Arts (2008), Leena Mikkola. Working as a graphic designer for the past decades, Leena felt the need to create also outside the screen, and started finding ways to use her love for graphic design to create physical, 3-dimensional objects.
”I became interested in silversmithing and creating jewellery, because jewellery carries a strong historical and cultural power, despite of the small size. Form and function, as well as signs, symbols and meanings are in the core of the MISKIS.STUDIO jewellery.”
After nearly 15 years in Helsinki, Leena decided to move to Lapland and studied to become a Jewellery Artisan 2022–2024. The studies in Lapland in The Sámi Education Institute, Inari, had a major impact on becoming interested about her own roots and the rich cultural heritage of Lapland. Creating jewellery became a journey to discover self reflection, emotions and identity.

The story behind MISKIS.studio
“The name MISKIS has nothing and everything to do with the things I create”, Leena says. Lake Miskisjärvi is in North of Finland where Leena grew up and her family had a small cabin. “I used to go there often alone. It was a good place to find peace with my thoughts and fears, since there was no electricity, no running water, just me, the surrounding nature and my imagination. That was a good source for creating.”
The contrast of the northern nature, it's beauty and it’s rawness, is in the backbone of the brand – all created objects have their beauty with certain roughness in them.
The location of Lake Miskisjärvi has also interesting history, there used to be temporary tombs because of the far distant church ground. So, in a way it carries ‘hidden agenda’, combining the body and the soul to it’s roots, anchoring our selves to the past and to the future.
